During my five years of living in New York, I always tried to fly out of LaGuardia. Despite the hundreds of times people told me it was a horrible airport with tons of delays, I never had any problems. Plus, the taxi ride to and from LaGuardia never seemed more than 30 minutes and it was always reasonably priced (around $25) for me to get to the West Village.
The only time I would fly out of Newark is when work was paying for the very expensive car service. I never took the AirTran, because it seemed to require too many steps and I was always afraid of some sort of hiccup causing me to miss my plane. Although, I did like taking the bus from Newark back to Penn Station, because it was cheap and easy.
Unfortunately, one time I arrived in the new Continental terminal from a business trip and I had absolutely no cash on me. It was late at night and I desperately wanted to get home, so I thought I would take a cab. I searched and searched the terminal and I could never find an ATM! I was furious. The few people I could find who were working there had no idea where I could go to get money. Luckily, I had just enough money to take the bus.
I know of some others who have used the "public transportation route" and I am hoping they will write in. Unfortunately, I have never been known as a person who is fond of public transport (even though in Paris, the system is brilliant and I use it all the time).
