Manhattanhenge 2012: May 29/30 and July 11/12

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson on Friday posted the 2012 dates for Manhattanhenge, when the sun sets in alignment with the Manhattan street grid.
Since the primary streets of Manhattan’s street grid is about 30 degrees east of geographic north, the -henge event does not coincide with the equinox.
Tyson, the director of the Hayden Planetarium in the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History, coined the “Manhattanhenge” term and continues to calculate the dates each year.
2012 Manhattanhenge dates
Half-sun on the grid:
Tuesday, May 29 - 8:17 p.m.
Thursday, July 12 - 8:25 p.m.
Full-sun on the grid:
Wednesday, May 30 - 8:16 p.m.
Wednesday, July 11 - 8:24 p.m.
Tyson’s Manhattanhenge page offers viewing tips: “For best effect, position yourself as far east in Manhattan as possible. But ensure that when you look west across the avenues you can still see New Jersey. Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th. 42nd, 57th, and several streets adjacent to them. The Empire State building and the Chrysler building render 34th street and 42nd streets especially striking vistas.”
