Vintage subways return for holidays; antique buses idled

The MTA’s vintage subway special has returned for the holidays and will run on the M line every Saturday through Christmas Eve.
However, the vintage buses will not return to the city streets this year due to financial reasons, an MTA spokesman today told NewYorkology. The vintage buses, which are normally housed in regular MTA depots, require costly maintenance around the year for them to be able to hit the streets in December, he said.
It’s unclear if the vintage buses will return for 2012, the MTA spokesman said.
Update as of Dec. 12: One vintage bus will run on 42nd Street from Dec. 12 through 16. Update: The vintage bus run has been extended to weekdays through Dec. 23.
This year’s Saturday “Nostalgia Shoppers’ Special Train” will be made up of R1/9 subway cars and run between the Queens Plaza and 2nd Avenue stations. The cost to ride is $2.25, the same as any other train. The Nostalgia Train will aim to stick to a schedule so it’s easier for antique-seekers to catch the train.
Departures from 2nd Avenue:
