What's open Christmas Day 2011 in New York City

Much of New York City stays open on Christmas Day. Here’s the list of the major museums, restaurants, clubs, ice rinks, zoos and shows open on Christmas in 2011:

Shows
Playbill’s list of Broadway’s Christmas Day shows include “Billy Elliot,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Chicago,” “Follies,” “Godspell,” “Jersey Boys,” “Memphis,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” “Rock of Ages,” “Sister Act,” “Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway,” and “Mamma Mia!”

Off-Broadway shows with Dec. 25 performance times include “Avenue Q,” “The Gazillion Bubble Show,” “Million Dollar Quartet,” “Say Goodnight Gracie,” “Sistas: The Musical,” “Stomp” and “Voca People.”

TKTS at the South Street Seaport will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 4 p.m.; the Times Square booth will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for matinees and then 3 to 7 p.m. for evening shows; the Brooklyn location will be closed.

Radio City Spectacular will perform at 1, 4 and 7:30 p.m.

Big Apple Circus has shows at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m.

Michael Feinstein and Barbara Cook sing at Feinstein’s at Loews Regency at 8 p.m.

4 Generations of Miles- Mike Stern, Jimmy Cobb, Buster Williams, Sonny Fortune will play the Iridium Jazz Club at 8:30 and 10 p.m.

A Swinging Birdland Christmas will begin at 7 and 10 p.m. at Birdland.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dances Streams, Journey, Minus 16 and Revelations at 7:30 p.m. at City Center.

Chris Botti plays the Blue Note at 8 and 10:30 p.m.

Cedar Walton Quartet plays the Village Vanguard at 9 and 11 p.m.

Maccabeats play B.B. King Blues Club & Grill at 7:30 p.m.

DJ Rekha presents Bollywood Disco Xmas at Le Poisson Rouge at 10 p.m.

230 Fifth rooftop lounge opens from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Status uncertain/removed from Le Poisson Rouge calendar: Free The Village Gate’s “Old Fashioned Piano Party” starts at 9 p.m. at Le Poisson Rouge

Museums
Jewish Museum galleries are open from 11 a.m. to 5:45 4:30 4 p.m. with ticketed Macaroons family concerts at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. (Update as of Dec. 23: A museum spokesman told NewYorkology the museum will close early at 4:30 p.m. on Christmas. Update as of Dec. 25: The museum website now says it will close it 4 p.m. )

Museum at Eldridge Street will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a Klez for Kids family concert at 1 p.m.

Socrates Sculpture Park, which is always free, is open from 10 a.m. to sunset, at 4:33 p.m.

Museum of Jewish Heritage will be open with crafts, tours, and films in conjunction with the special exhibition, “Emma Lazarus: Poet of Exiles.”

Madame Tussauds wax museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Discovery’s Times Square Exhibition featuring the Dead Sea Scrolls and CSI: The Experience exhibitions will open from 10 11 a.m. with the last admission at 7 5 p.m.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not Odditorium is open daily from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m.

The Jewish Children’s Museum will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

9/11 Memorial will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the last admission at 7 p.m. (A free, reserved pass is required.)

Update: Bodies and Dialog in the Dark at the South Street Seaport, which both had tickets on sale for Dec. 25, will be closed Christmas Day.

Zoos
Prospect Park Zoo opens from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with Presents to the Animals — meerkats and North American river otters — at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Queens Zoo will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with sea lion feedings at 11:15 a.m., 2 and 4 p.m. as well as presents to the animals — coyotes, pumas and Andean bears — at 1, 2:15 an 2:45 p.m.

Central Park Zoo will be open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with feedings throughout the day for the penguins, harbor seals and sea lions.

New York Aquarium will open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with feedings throughout the day for the sharks, sea otters, penguins and walrus.

Observation decks
Rockefeller Center’s Top of the Rock will be open from 8 a.m. to midnight with the last elevator going up at 11:10 p.m.

The Empire State Building will be open.

Skating rinks
The Rink at Rockefeller Center will be open for skating session from 8 to 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to noon, 12:30 to 2 p.m., 2:30 to 4 p.m., 4:30 to 6 p.m., 6:30 to 8 p.m., 8:30 to 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. to midnight.

Indoor Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers will be open from noon to 5:20 p.m.

Wollman Rink in southern Central Park will be open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Trump Lasker Skating Rink on the north end of Central Park will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Citi Pond ice rink at Bryant Park will be open from 8 a.m. to midnight.

Standard Hotel ice rink will be open from 9 a.m. to midnight.

Aviator Sports ice rink at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn will open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.

City Ice Pavilion in Long Island City will be open for skating from noon to 5:15 p.m.

Movie theaters
Chinese & a Movie screening of “Raiders of The Lost Ark” and “Jurrasic Park” at 92YTribeca begins at 2 p.m.

AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13” screenings include “”Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol: The IMAX Experience” and “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn 3D.”

Sunshine Cinemas screenings include “The Flowers of War,” “Shame” and “A Dangerous Method.”

IFC Center screenings include “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Eames: The Architect and the Painter,” “Pina 3D,” “Into the Abyss” and “Princess Mononoke.”

Angelika will screen “The Artist,” “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” “My Week with Marilyn,” “Carnage” and “Melancholia.”

BAM screens “A Dangerous Method,” “Pina in 3-D,” “The Descendants” and “The Artist.”

Film Forum will screen “Gold Rush,” “Addiction Incorporated,” “Miracle on 34th Street” and “Last Year at Marienbad.”

“The Artist” will screen at the Paris Theater.

Quad Cinema screenings include “The Help,” “Take Shelter,” “The Skin I Live In,” “J. Edgar,” “The Ides of March” and “Moneyball.”

Tours
21st Annual Christmas Day Jewish Lower East Side Tours with Big Onion begin at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Ghosts of New York leads Jewish Ghosts and Other Spirits of the Lower East Side walking tours at 1:30 and 3:30 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and The Ghosts of Grand Central at 7:30 p.m.

A free Central Park walking tour starts at 12:30 p.m.

Madison Square Park photo safari tour starts at 1 p.m. (sold out)

Rockefeller Center tours are available at 10 and 11 a.m., noon, 1, 3 and 4 p.m.

Radio City Music Hall tours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Municipal Art Society will lead a reservation-required walking tour of Rockefeller Center: Art Deco Masterwork at 10 a.m. (sold out)

The Ride theater/tour bus runs from noon to 7 p.m.

Liberty Helicopter tours are offered from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m.

HeliNY tours are available from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

New York Helicopter Charter tours are available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Zip Aviation offers helicopter tours from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Free Jewish Lower East Side tour at noon.

Free Flatiron District tour at 11 a.m.

Sports
The NY Knicks will play the Boston Celtics at Madison Square Garden at noon.

The Coney Island Polar Bear Club regular Sunday swim begins at 1 p.m.

The driving range at Chelsea Piers will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bowlmor Times Square will open at 1 p.m.

Canceled/moved to Yonkers: The second annual Christmas Marathon will start at 11 a.m.

Blue Haven will be open from noon to 2 a.m., showing All NBA games and serving traditional Christmas dinner from 3 to 9 p.m.

Restaurants and markets
Reservations for restaurants open Christmas Day are available through OpenTable.

Christmas brunch at The Carlyle starts at 1:30 p.m. with live music from Chris Gillespie.

B.B. King Blues Club & Grill hosts the Harlem Gospel Brunch at 1:30 p.m.

The Ben Holmes/Patrick Farrel Duo plays the City Winery Klezmer Brunch at 11 a.m.

Carnegie Deli is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 4 a.m.

Religious services and concerts
St. Patrick’s Cathedral Christmas Day mass will be celebrated at 7, 8, 9, 10:15 a.m., noon, 1 and 5:30 p.m. (Midnight mass requires a ticket.)

Medieval & Baroque Treasury concert at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine at 2 and 8 p.m.

Choral Eucharist with Carols at St. Bart’s at 11 a.m.

Christmas Day Holy Eucharist with traditional Christmas hymns and carols at Trinity Wall Street at 9 and 11:15 a.m.

Shops, spas and more
Holiday Shops at Bryant Park will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Russ & Daughters will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Zabar’s will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fairway’s Upper West Side location will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; the Upper East Side location will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; the Harlem and Red Hook stores will be closed Christmas Day.

Spa Castle in Queens - 6 a.m. to midnight

MTA Bus, Staten Island Railway and NYC Transit buses and subways will operate on a Sunday schedule.

PATH will operate on a holiday/Saturday schedule.

Metro-North will operate a regular holiday (Sunday) schedule.

Staten Island Ferry runs on a holiday schedule with service every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Places open on past Christmas holidays but unconfirmed for 2011: Central Park carousel.

In addition, some of the city’s main attractions are always open rain or shine, night or day, including the Brooklyn Bridge, Staten Island Ferry, and Times Square.

This list will be updated until Christmas Day.
