Future of Space Exploration exhibit opens at AMNH

The American Museum of Natural History on Saturday will open “Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration,” an exhibition that looks at the possibility of a colonies on Mars, construction of a space elevator on the Moon, the search for life on Europa and other endeavors.
“Beyond Planet Earth is one of the most ambitious exhibitions on the future of space travel ever attempted,” said Michael Novacek, a senior vice president and provost for science at the museum. “What is significant is that the Museum has moved beyond a retrospective to create a forward-looking examination of our future in the cosmos guided by the latest research, some of it conducted by scientists in the Museum’s Department of Astrophysics.”
The new exhibition will be on display at the museum through Aug. 12.
In addition, the public art laser installation “From the Distant Past” will cover the exterior of the museum’s Hayden Sphere nightly through Nov. 27. Designed by artist Tim Otto Roth and astronomer Bob Fosbury, the laser display is based on data captured by Hubble’s spectrometers. The laser show will play nightly from 5 to 11 p.m. and is best seen from 81st Street outside the museum.
Suggested adult admission to the museum is now $19. Earlier this summer the price was raised from $16.
