As the temperatures go up, a couple of the city’s iconic landmarks have shut down, including the crown of the Statue of Liberty.

“We just closed the crown at 2 p.m. today as the heat index is 110,” Jane Ahern, Chief of Public Affairs at the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island, told NewYorkology via email.

The remainder of Liberty Island, the pedestal and museum inside the statue will remain open, Ahern said. The crown may reopen in the morning and the National Park Service will assess the situation hourly, she said.

Belvedere Castle has also been closed due to the heat, according to a tweet from the Central Park Conservancy.

Excessive heat is forecast into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Update as of 6 p.m.: The Metropolitan Museum of Art roof garden also closed today due to the extreme heat, a museum spokesperson confirmed to NewYorkology via email.
