NYC Fleet Week 2011 schedule of events

New York’s 24th Fleet Week begins Wednesday morning as the Parade of Ships including the USS New York arrives in the harbor for a long-weekend of events.

The tribute to America’s armed forces will include ship tours, free concerts, military demonstrations, a flyover and a wreath-laying ceremony on Memorial Day.

Many deals are also on offer for active-duty and retired military.

The schedule:

On May 25, the Parade of Ships enter the New York Harbor under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and sail up Hudson River from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Military flyovers will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. near the Verrazano Bridge and up the Hudson River.

Portions of the parade will appear on webcams in the New York City webcam gallery, including the Statue of Liberty webcam, Intrepid webcam, NY Harbor from the Empire State Building webcam, Wired NY view of the Hudson and NY Harbor and New York Cruise Terminal.

On May 25, the Federal Hall National Memorial opens three-day exhibition of art on loan from the National Museum of the Marine Corps’ Combat Art collection. Update: The exhibition will remain on view to June 1.

From May 25 through 30, the top tiers of the Empire State Building will light up red, white and blue.

On May 26, demonstrations of military skills will take place on the pier at the Intrepid from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Army vessel LSV-1 will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pier 86.

From May 26 at Pier 88, tours will be available of the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), USCGC Willow (WLB 202) and USCGC Tampa (WMEC 902.) Tours will be offered to the first 2,500 in attendance beginning at 8 a.m. daily, except Sunday.

From May 26 at the Homeport Pier in Staten Island,. amphibious assault ship USS New York (LPD 21), and three Oliver Hazard Perry- class frigates USCGC Katherine Walker (WLM 552) will be moored and will be open daily beginning at 8 a.m.

On May 27, the Intrepid hosts performances by Broadway cast members from “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” “Catch Me if You Can,” “Jersey Boys,” “Chicago,” “Mamma Mia,” “Wonderland” and “Rock of Ages” from noon to 1 p.m. “Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles” will perform at 2:30 p.m. Demonstrations of military skills will take place on the Intrepid’s pier from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Army vessel LSV-1 will be open for tours form 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Pier 86.

May 27 is Military Day in Times Square with a performance by the Navy Band Northeast and USMC Band.

On May 27, the Intrepid begins its free summer movie series with a sunset screening of “Top Gun” on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier.

On May 27, Fleet Week Navy Demos begin at the New York Aquarium at Coney Island (though May 29.)

On May 28 at the Intrepid, cast members from the Broadway musical “Wicked” will perform at 11:30 a.m. and The Manhattan Dolls will sing at 4 p.m. Demonstrations of military skills will take place on the pier from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Army vessel LSV-1 will be open for tours from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Pier 86.

On May 28, the two-day Jones Beach Air Show begins, this year with a F-22 Raptor the F-18 Super Hornet and an A-10 Thunderbolt II.

On May 29, Urban Oyster offers its Brooklyn Navy Yard tour with special focus on military and shipbuilding history.

On May 29, Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn at 7 p.m. will stage The Grand Procession: Civil War 150th Anniversary with historians, musicians, singers and costumed re-enactors.

On May 29, the Bronx Arts Ensemble’ will play a free pre-Memorial Day concert at 2 p.m. at the Van Cortlandt Nature Center.

On May 29, visiting members of the Armed Forces will compete in tug of war from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Intrepid. The George Gee Swing Band will perform at 5 p.m. The Army vessel LSV-1 will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Pier 86. Demonstrations of military skills will take place on the pier from 10 a.m to 7 p.m.

On May 30, Intrepid will host the annual Memorial Day commemoration ceremony at 11 a.m. featuring the unfurling of a 100-foot American flag on the flight deck, the playing of Taps, a ceremonial wreath laying, 3-volley rifle salute and a military flyover. Later, the U.S. Coast Guard search & rescue team will host a demonstration at 2 p.m. The Army vessel LSV-1 will open for tours form 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Demonstrations of military skills will take place on the pier from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On May 30, there are free Memorial Day concerts at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine (with the New York Philharmonic) at 8 p.m. and at Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery (with the ISO Symphonic Band) at 3 p.m.

On May 30, the General Grant National Memorial hosts free lectures on How Decoration Day Became Memorial Day at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. (Reservations required: 212-666-1640.)

On May 30 , Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn will host the The March of Honor: Civil War 150th Anniversary at 11 a.m.
On May 30, the Central Park Conservancy’s free, 2-mile Memorial Walk will focus on how different generations of New Yorkers used Central Park to remember their veterans.

On May 30, Big Onion leads its Revolutionary New York walking tour at 2 p.m.

Deals
On Memorial Day, Bryant Park Grill and other ARK-owned restaurants will once again give away a free meal (excluding alcohol) for any veteran or uniformed soldier in the armed forces, a spokesman for the restaurant told NewYorkology via email.

ARK Restaurants involved include Sequoia, Red, Robert, The Grill Room, El Rio Grande and Canyon Road Grill.

NY Waterway is offering free service during Fleet Week for veterans and uniformed, active-duty military personnel. Veterans will be asked to show their Identification Cards for access to the discount.

There will be free admission for active military and their families from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend through the Blue Star Museums program at many locations nationwide, including the American Folk Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Historical Society.

Times Square businesses are offering many Fleet Week deals.

Empire State Building admission is always free to military personnel in uniform.

The Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium offer free admission to United States Armed Forces.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is located on the Hudson River on Pier 86, where 46 Street meets the West Side Highway. The museum complex includes the Intrepid aircraft carrier, the guided-missile submarine Growler; more than 30 aircraft including an A-12 Blackbird, and a British Airways Concorde. Admission is free for active and retired military.

Elsewhere: The U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels will be at the Millville Air Show in Millville, N.J. from May 28 through May 29. Update: The Blue Angels were replaced by the Strike Fighter Squadron 143.
