Black Eyed Peas to play free Central Park concert June 9

blackeyedpeascentralpark Update as of Aug. 17: The concert has been rescheduled for Sept. 30.

Update as of early-morning June 10: Concert organizers have issued a statement that says in part “ … we’re not about to give up on the Concert 4 NYC. We are exploring our options and hope to announce to you soon what our next plan will be. …”

Update: Black Eyed Peas concert has been canceled.

Weather Update: On air at 5 p.m. NY1 is reporting gates will not open before 7:30 p.m. and the concert will start no earlier than 8:30 p.m. due to the approaching severe weather.

The Black Eyed Peas will play a mostly-free concert June 9 at 7:30 p.m. on Central Park’s Great Lawn to help raise funds for the anti-poverty Robin Hood Foundation, organizers announced today.

Although the concert will be free, tickets will be required. And: “Throughout the concert, music lovers will be encouraged to donate to Robin Hood via text message,” states the release announcing the concert.

Funds raised through the event will go toward reducing poverty and to open three Black Eyed Peas’ Peapod Academies in New York City.

A total of 54,000 free tickets will be given away through the blackeyedpeas.robinhood.org website. Registration will open May 11. Tickets will be required to “ensure the safety of all fans attending the event,” organizers said.

Update as of May 11: The online Black Eyed Peas ticket lottery is now open. Each entry is for four free tickets; winners will be notified via email by May 24.

VIP tickets will also be sold for $500, $1,000 and $2,500.

Chase and Clear Channel are the event’s co-sponsors.

“We are thrilled to follow in the footsteps of icons such as Simon & Garfunkel and Diana Ross by performing a free concert for our fans in Central Park,” Fergie said in the news release. “But more importantly, we are performing to benefit Robin Hood’s efforts to help those living in poverty in New York City and to help disadvantaged youth in New York with the launch of our Peapod Academy.”

Update as of May 25: “There were over 90,000 entries requesting a total of 360,000 tickets in the giveaway and winners were notified this morning by email,” the event’s sponsor said in a news release today. VIP tickets are still available from $500 through Chase bank or Robin Hood.

Update as of June 1: Organizers today added more acts to the line-up: Natasha Bedingfield, MC Hammer, Debbie Harry, LL Cool J and Carole King, with appearances by Zach Braff, Whoopi Goldberg and Jimmy Smits. The free tickets are gone, but VIP tickets are still on sale.

Update as of June 7: Taylor Swift will also make an appearance, organizers announced today.

Update as of June 9: The concert will get its own livestream.
