Old City Hall subway station opens for Feb. 27 tours

The NYC Transit Museum tours are getting more interesting with their access to off-limits spaces, but they’re increasingly hard to reserve unless you get in during the members-only booking window. Museum membership starts at $40 for an individual and includes free or discounted access to museum exhibits, programs and special events for one year.

The remaining winter transit tours for 2011:

Saturday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. (sold out)
Prospect Park Substation Tour
Turn-of-the-century Prospect Park Substation tour includes a discussion of the 1918 Malbone Street derailment. $25 for adults, $15 for children ages 10 to 17.

Sunday, Feb. 27 at noon and 2 p.m.
The Jewel in the Crown: Old City Hall Station
Normally off-limits, a 6 train will take the tour group to the original City Hall station, which features chandeliers, skylights, and vaulted Guastavino ceilings. Museum membership (which can be purchased over the phone when making reservations) is required, plus the tour cost, which is $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 5 to 17.

Historic Pennsylvania Station Tour
Historian and retired Long Island Rail Road manager Andrew Sparberg leads a tour of LIRR facilities and discusses the discuss the original McKim, Mead & White-designed building. The cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 5 to 17.

Sunday, March 20 and April 17 at 10:30 a.m. (both sold out)
Jamaica Maintenance Yard
Tour of the maintenance yard at the southern tip of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Originally built for the Independent Subway System in the 1930s, this facility now services and stores E, F, G and R trains. The price is $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 10 to 17.

Sunday, March 27 at 11 a.m.
Public Art, Historic Architecture
Museum Curator Carissa Amash leads an art and architecture tour of select stations, such as artist James Garvey’s Lariat Seat Loops at the IRT 33rd Street station and Mary Miss’ “frames” of historic and structural elements at union Square. The cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 5 to 17.

Saturday, April 2 at 10 a.m.
Inside Moynihan Station: A Tour of the Farley Building (sold out)
Tour of select areas of the Farley Post Office as it turns into Moynihan Station, with Bronson Fox, AICP, Vice President of the Moynihan Station Development Corporation. The cost is $25 for adults.

Saturday, April 9 at 10 a.m.
Bronx Bound: Off the Beaten (Subway) Track (sold out)
Suzanne Reisman, author of “Off the Beaten (Subway) Track: New York City’s Best Unusual Attractions,” leads a tour of Bronx locations including the World’s Largest Armory and the Hall of Fame of Great Americans. It’s $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 5 to 17.
