Key to the City art project unlocks NYC's hidden spaces
They’re handing out keys to the city starting this evening, and to get one you don’t even need to successfully land a plane in the Hudson River or save a stranger from the path of a subway train.
 Creative Time and artist Paul Ramírez Jonas have set up a kiosk in Times Square and will be giving away free keys to the city. Once you have a key, you can unlock secret boxes and doors in all five boroughs ranging from the Whitney Museum to St. John the Divine to Fresh Kills.
The Key to the City kiosk, located in Times Square between 43rd and 44th streets, will be open weekdays from 2 to 8 p.m. and weekends from noon to 8 p.m.. The kiosk will be there through June 27, with locks available through Labor Day.
The keys are free, but remember this is an art project:Come to the kiosk with a friend, because the Keys aren’t just given out—you will recognize a friend, colleague, or loved one for a certain deed or trait by bestowing a Key to them. After waiting in a short queue, you will receive a Key to bestow, and a map of the locks the Key unlocks. The Keys are free, and you can bestow as many as you would like.
