Biennial to go 24-hour non-stop for three days in May
It’s not quite 24/7, more like 24/3.
The Whitney will morph into a 24-hour museum in May as part of a Biennial work conceived by artist Michael Asher.
In an audio guide at the Biennial, co-curator Francesco Bonami refers to the concept as “an intervention” to make the museum more accessible to people who can’t usually get there.
The Whitney Museum of American Art will open May 26 at midnight and remain open non-stop until May 28 at 11:59 p.m., a museum spokesman confirmed to NewYorkology today. More details will be available soon.
Asher original proposal sought to open the museum for a full week, but it was cut to three days “due to budgetary and human resources limitations,” according to the project description at the Whitney’s website.
The full Whitney Biennial, now in its 75th edition, is on view through May 30.
Update as of May 12: The Whitney has added blocks of pay-what-you-wish admission hours to the non-stop event:
Wednesday, May 26, 12 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Wednesday, May 26, 11 p.m. to Thursday, May 27 at 9 a.m.
Thursday, May 27, 11 p.m. to Friday, May 28 at 9 a.m.
Friday, May 28, 6 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
