Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex in SoHo to close Jan. 3
Barely a year after it opened its doors in SoHo, the The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex will close.
“The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex NYC will conclude its stay in New York on January 3 at 8PM. The Rock Annex is exploring opportunities for a tour that would bring exclusive artifacts to music fans and rock enthusiasts around the world,” the mini-museum states on its website.
Still unknown is the ultimate fate of some of the annex’s artifacts, including the awning from CBGB club, according to the Cleveland-Plain Dealer, the hometown paper for the primary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The museum opened in November 2008 at 76 Mercer St., map. It features exhibits on John Lennon and other musicians important to New York City music history.
Admission to the annex is $28.85 (plus a $3 service fee for online and phone orders,) making it more expensive than the Met, MoMA, Guggenheim or the Whitney. However, it falls in the range of other pop-culture museum-like attractions in NYC such as the Discovery Times Square Exposition Center, ($24.50 for just the Titanic exhibit;) Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, ($28 with an online discount;) Ripley’s Believe it or Not Odditorium, ($29.34;) and Bodies … The Exhibition, ($26.50 weekdays and $27.50 on weekends and holidays.)
Another high-priced venue, the Sports Museum of America, closed in February after less than a year in operation.
