Tugboat race, historic ship rally set for Hudson River

tugboatssix.jpg

It’s going to be a busy weekend on the Hudson River.

A Historic Ship Rally on Saturday — featuring free rides for the public — will be followed by Sunday’s 17th Annual Tugboat Race and Competition.

Saturday’s event will feature access to the historic tugs Pegasus, Cornell and Urger along with the Erie Canal barge Day Peckinpaugh, the Waterfront Museum and Showboat Barge, and the Clearwater sloop.

On Sunday, the tugs will start the morning at Pier 84, near West 44th Street. At 10 a.m. they’ll parade up the Hudson River to the starting line near the 79th Street Boat Basin. The race back down to Pier 84 — one nautical mile — will start at 10:30 a.m. Post-race events will include nose-to-nose pushing contests and a line-toss competition.
