Grand staircase installed at Brooklyn Bridge Park

The massive expansion of the waterfront Brooklyn Bridge Park is well underway, with major sections expected to open by the end of the year.
Pier 1, a man-made peninsula south of the Brooklyn Bridge, will feature two giant lawns but a major attraction is sure to be the “grand staircase” offering amphitheater-style seating with a picture-postcard view of Lower Manhattan and the bridges of the East River.

The stones are actually recycled and worn with age and graffiti from another East River location, Nicholas Elkovitch, a landscape architect explained during a Tuesday evening tour of the site. Elkovitch works for Brooklyn-based Michael Van Valkenburgh, the landscape design firm for the project.
The staircase slabs are from the Roosevelt Island Bridge, which is undergoing its own massive reconstruction project
The bridge, known as the Welfare Island Bridge when it was built in the 1950s, spans the East Channel of the East River, connecting Queens and Roosevelt Island.

Correction: This story originally said all the stones are in place, but an official with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corp. e-mailed to say the steps are only 2/3rd installed. Additional steps will make the staircase taller, she said.
