'Burn the Floor' Broadway review roundup: erotic, tacky

While the word “tacky” appears in several of the reviews of Broadway’s new ballroom dance show “Burn the Floor,” there are indeed fans among the critical crowd.

The dance show lacks a plot but pointedly delivers to its target audience: fans of the reality TV competitions.

“Burn the Floor” plays through Oct. 18, but stars Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff of “Dancing With the Stars” are here only through Aug. 16. It plays the Longacre Theatre, 220 W. 48th St., map. Regular tickets are priced from $59.50 to $111.50 with premium seats for $175 each. Student rush tickets are $26.50.

The “Burn the Floor” reviews:

Post - “”Burn the Floor” consists of a breathless, plotless succession of ballroom routines. That’s it, and it’s either a lot or not very much, depending on your love for this type of dancing.”

Newsday - “Either way, this is a glorified floor show at Broadway prices.”

Bloomberg - “‘Burn the Floor’ is a dance show I can wholeheartedly recommend to everyone, even to people who can’t tell an entrechat from an entrecote, and those who think that watching dance on the stage is for sissies. “

New York Times - “While it has been spruced up for its arrival in New York with new sets and costumes, the production still looks more ripe for Bournemouth than for Broadway. The set consists of little more than a bandstand with steps, some flimsy-looking backdrops and a disco ball.”

Daily News - “With its zero percent body fat and four-alarm sizzle, “Burn the Floor” is the stage equivalent of a fast, frisky beach read. With legs.”

Variety - “While there’s only about 15 ounces of collective body fat onstage, there’s also about 15 ounces of imagination.”

Hollywood Reporter - “This dazzling Latin and ballroom dance revue is brilliantly performed by a cast of international dance-sport champions.”

NY1 - “Remember “Contact,” Susan Stroman’s Tony-winning dance show? Well, “Burn The Floor” is “Contact” on steroids, minus the story. How worthwhile this is depends on your tolerance for Broadway’s steady expansion into mindless mass entertainment.”

amNewYork - “But in spite of this two-hour helping of nonstop athletics and erotic flavor, this obvious attempt to cash in on the popularity of television dance competitions feels lame and tame and tacky. “
