Semi-spontaneous street theater descends on NYC

If My Friends Could See Me Now rehearsal from BREAK OUT IN SONG on Vimeo.

A bit of spontaneous-style musical theater will come to New York City streets today as “Break Out in Song” will begin staging free performances throughout Manhattan.

The professional dancers will be dressed as every day shoppers and folk going about their business right up until the point the music starts. The series starts today at 6 p.m. with “If My Friends Could See Me Now” at the Time Warner Center.

It will be a bit like the YouTube-famous “Sound of Music” in the Central Station Antwerp or the “Single Ladies” flash-dance at Piccadilly Circus.

Other performances:

July 17 - 6 p.m.
“Don’t Rain on My Parade”
South Street Seaport – Historic Cobble Stone District

July 18 - 3 p.m.
“Anything Goes”
The Intrepid flight deck

July 19 - 1 p.m.
“Consider Yourself”
Times Square

Video: Rehearsal video from the “Break Out in Song” website.

July 16, 2009 7:32 AM in Broadway, Cheap Stuff, Downtown, Kids, Midtown, Museums, Sightsology
