'Billy Elliot' best musical; 'God of Carnage' best play
“Billy Elliot” was the big winner at the 63rd annual Tony Awards, dancing off with 10 trophies, including best new musical.
The best new play of the season went to “God of Carnage,” whose Marcia Gay Harden also won for best leading actress.
Other notable wins of the night went to Geoffrey Rush (leading actor in a play,) for Exit the King;” Angela Lansbury (featured actress in a play) for “Blithe Spirit;” Liza Minnelli for “Liza’s at The Palace” as best special theatrical event; Alice Ripley (leading actress in a musical) for “Next to Normal;” Karen Olivo (featured actress in a musical) for “West Side Story;” and for Roger Robinson (featured actor in a play) for “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.”
“Hair” was voted best revival of a musical and the best revival of a play went to the The Norman Conquests trilogy: “Table Manners,” “Living Together” and “Round and Round the Garden.”
