Water Taxi adds Sandy Hook, Rockaways for summer

nywatertaxidock.jpg

Although there will be three sandy Water Taxi beaches in New York City this summer, none will actually offer access to the water. But on weekends in July and August, the New York Water Taxi will provide service to two beaches that offer both sand and surf: the Rockaways and Sandy Hook.

The boats will run Saturdays and Sundays from Manhattan’s Pier 11 near Wall Street to Sandy Hook on the Jersey shore and to the Rockaways’ Jacob Riis Park at Gateway National Recreation Area. The routes were announced today by Harbor Experience Companies, the new entity that was created when the Water Taxi purchased Circle Line Downtown.

The Water Taxi currently provides weekday-only commuter service to the Rockaways for $6 one-way.

The New York Water Taxi will enter the Sandy Hook market with some competition, as it is already served by Seastreak ferries. Seastreak’s daily beach service to Sandy Hook will begin May 23. In Manhattan, they pick up at E. 35th Street and Pier 11. The round-trip ticket is $40.
