New sleepover dates at Rubin Museum, Bronx Zoo

It’s good to be a kid.

The Rubin Museum of Art will host Mt. Everest-themed sleepover featuring a veteran climber who will rappel down the center of the buildings spiral staircase, and lead the kids back up through six stories of “snow,” “ice,” and “rocks” that threaten to avalanche.

The June 13 overnighter in the Himalayan museum has been coordinated with the American Alpine Club as part of the World Science Festival, which runs form June 10 through 14.

The full schedule for the Rubin sleepover:

Sherpas, RMA Guides, and some of the world’s most experienced Mount Everest climbers led by Robert Anderson will lead these young climbers through the basics of camping, safety, teamwork, and leadership skills necessary in high altitude climbing. Together they will explore Himalayan art, Sherpa culture and food, and learn about mountaineering etiquette. In order to reach the summit, participants must overcome the challenges climbers face such as tying knots with mittens on and operating two-way radios. Anderson, a veteran of eight Everest expeditions, led the 50th anniversary summit climb in 2003. He will rappel straight down the center of RMA’s spiral staircase, hooked into a rope suspended from the museum’s 90-foot high atrium. At nightfall, the climbers will descend to base camp to enjoy a hearty tsampa dinner, exchange stories in their tents of the mysterious yeti that roam the slopes of Everest, and fall asleep under the mighty mountain’s peak.

This is only the fourth time the Rubin has offered its Peak Experience ultimate sleepover. There are 40 spots open for children ages 9 to 12 at a cost of $175 per child, which includes dinner, snack, and a breakfast of traditional Tibetan food. Tickets: (212) 620-5000 ×344.

A few other NYC museums and zoos offer sleepovers. This Saturday’s Bronx Zoo Family Overnight Safari still has eight spots available, although the rest of the season is sold out and taking wait-list names.

The American Museum of Natural History’s next Night at the Museum sleepovers are scheduled for May 22, June 19 and June 26. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum this year started offering Operation Slumber sleepovers for groups. And across the harbor in Jersey City, the Liberty Science Center offers overnight Camp-ins.

(Thanks to Mommy Poppins and Kid City for the Rubin tip, and to @Doublelattemama @MaplewoodHome on Twitter for Liberty Science info.)
