New maps of NYC for bikers, history buffs, geeks
A batch of new (and old) maps worth perusing:
The aerial virtual tour of New York at Pixelcase.com is nothing short of awesome.
MashedWorld has built a great map-mashup embedded with webcams. It’s missing some great ones in NYC, and has a Jersey camera misplaced in Brooklyn, but other than that, very cool.
The National Parks of NY Harbor Conservancy has produced an excellent self-guided walking tour and map of George Washington’s NY. It’s free and downloadable.
As part of the NY400 celebrations, online you can now find Henry Hudson’s 1609 maps. In September, the collection will go on display at the South Street Seaport Museum.
The Staten island Ferry Rider’s Guide, free and downloadable, includes a great map of the sights in the harbor.
In April the city issued its new NYC Cycling Maps for 2009, free and downloadable.
The WalkJogRun iPhone Application features user-submitted jogging routes, including dozens in NYC.
A little bit like riding the Buccaneer, there is a Here & There 3-D map of Manhattan. See Jason Kottke’s site for an explanation of the concept.
Walking Off the Big Apple, a great map-based collection of tours through New York, recently covered the East 60s as part of a then-and-now look at Walker Evans’ 1938 photographs of a E. 61st Street.
Anatomically correct map of New York City.
(Webcam mashup and running maps found via Google Maps Mania and aerial NY found via Twitter from Mike Arauz and Sean Ganann.)
Earlier: I. P. Freely wallet-sized map to NYC - for $2.50
