Broadway upcoming: 'Addams Family,' Mamet's 'Race'
Nathan Lane, Gomez. Bebe Neuwirth, Morticia. That’s the official news for the leads in “The Addams Family,” which is just one of many upcoming shows trickling out info for the next season on Broadway.
The show’s official website spells out the plot:“Storm clouds are gathering over the Addams Family manse. Daughter Wednesday, now 18, is experiencing a sensation that surprises and disgusts her — caring about another person. Young Pugsley, jealous of his sister’s attention, begs her to keep torturing him, severely, while mother Morticia, conflicted over her daughter’s lurch into womanhood, fears being upstaged and discarded…like yesterday’s road kill. All the while, father Gomez — master of the revels, mischievous and oblivious as ever — would prefer everything and everyone remain as it is. But when outsiders come to dinner, the events of one night will change forever this famously macabre family — a family so very different from your own…or maybe not.”
Other “Addams Family” casting includes Kevin Chamberlin is Uncle Fester, Krysta Rodriguez as Wednesday, Adam Riegler as Pugsley Zachary James as Lurch, Jackie Hoffman as Grandmama, as well as Terrence Mann, Carolee Carmello and Wesley Taylor as the Beineke family.
After an initial run in Chicago, previews will begin on Broadway on March 4 at a Nederlander theater to be determined, Variety reports. Opening night is currently scheduled for April 8. Tickets are not yet on sale.
Earlier in the season, a new David Mamet play, “Race,” will open with the Broadway debut of James Spader, according to the New York Times.
“Race” will play the Ethel Barrymore Theater, with previews starting Nov. 17 and opening night on Dec. 6.
The Steppenwolf Theatre told the Chicago Tribune it’s in advanced negotiations to bring Tracy Letts’ new play, “Superior Donuts,” to Broadway in the fall. Letts’ “August: Osage County,” is still on Broadway, but last week, the theater was at a mere 33 percent of capacity. (Link found via Steve on Broadway.)
Meanwhile, the sequel to “Phantom of the Opera” will not hit Broadway until April 2010, according to London’s Daily Mail. The Coney Island-set “Love Never Dies” will first play London and Toronto prior to Broadway, probably at the Neil Simon Theatre.
Not quite on Broadway, LaChanze and Orlando Jones will join the City Center’s staging of “The Wiz,” according to the NY Times. They’ll join Ashanti as Dorothy as announced earlier. Toto will be played by brindle-hair cairn terrier Nigel, Time Out reports. “The Wiz” will play June 12 through July 3 as part of the summer Encores! series.
