New York City's perfect sunset: Manhattanhenge

manhattanhenge34thstreetmay2009.jpg

Twice a year the sun sets in perfect alignment with the Manhattan street grid, providing a picture-perfect few minutes dubbed Manhattanhenge.

The term was coined by Neil deGrasse Tyson, the director of the Hayden Planetarium in the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. He’s also the one who calculates the -henge dates.

The next Manhattanhenge date for 2009 is Saturday, July 11 at 8:25 p.m.

In addition, you’ll be able to see the half sun set on the grid on July 12 at 8:25 p.m.
