Fleet Week flyover of four F-18 Hornets set for May 20

Consider this fair warning.

“A military aircraft flyover will occur on May 20, 2009 at 11:45 a.m. The flyover is part of the Fleet Week festivities and will include four military planes flying over New York City at a low altitude,” a spokesman for the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum told NewYorkology via e-mail today.

The flyover is timed to coincide with the Parade of Ships, marking the start of Fleet Week. The ships are set to arrive starting at 10:30 a.m.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., four F-18 Hornets will pass over the Verrazano Narrows Bridge at an altitude of 2,000 feet, he said. They’ll turn up the Hudson River and decrease their altitude to 1,000 feet. When the F-18s reach Pier 90, they’ll climb to 2,500 feet and higher, exiting New York City airspace over the George Washington Bridge.

Earlier this month, a plane sometimes used as Air Force One made an unannounced low flyby around New York Harbor, causing many to think a hijacked plan was again aiming for Manhattan. The White House aide who approved the photo-op flight was fired. Earlier this week, the Federal Aviation Administration abruptly the Navy to cancel a Hudson River flyby it had planned for Monday morning.
