Brooklyn's bed & breakfast boomlet
Recession or not, New York City is getting more hotel beds - even in the bed & breakfast niche in Brooklyn.
“In the last five years, we’ve seen our business double,” Monique Greenwood, the owner of Akwaaba Mansion in Bedford-Stuyvesant, told NewYorkology.
The 1860s mansion, which has been operating as a B&B since 1995, offers rooms for $175 per night, Fridays through Sundays and $160 during the other weekdays. Last year was the best ever, with about 40 percent of the guests coming from international locations, Greenwood said.
In the same neighborhood, The Moran Victorian, built in 1887, has opened as a B&B at 247 Hancock, between Tompkins and Marcy avenues.
Ditmas Park now has a new business association — the Bed and Breakfasts of Victorian Brooklyn — made up of seven B&Bs in Ditmas Park. They’re all listed in the website, including the newest B&B, The Blue Porch, on DeKoven Court.
