'Ruined' wins drama Pulitzer; 'Heights,' was a nominee
The Pulitzer Prize for drama today was awarded to Lynn Nottage’s “Ruined,” called a “searing drama set in chaotic Congo that compels audiences to face the horror of wartime rape and brutality while still finding affirmation of life and hope amid hopelessness.”
The Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of “Ruined” is currently playing Off-Broadway at City Center through May 10. Tickets are $75.
Finalists for the 2009 prize were Lin-Manuel Miranda’s and Quiara Alegría Hudes’ musical “In The Heights,” which is currently on Broadway, as well as Gina Gionfriddo’s “Becky Shaw,” which closed one month ago at the 2nd Stage Theater.
In other Pulitzer categories, the New York Times did exceptionally well including art critic Holland Cotter who was lauded by judges for “his wide ranging reviews of art, from Manhattan to China, marked by acute observation, luminous writing and dramatic storytelling.”
