Polo returning to Governors Island on Opening Day

poloclassicad.jpg

The Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic will return to Governors Island on May 30, a spokesperson for the spirits company told NewYorkology today.

The exhibition match of world-class players marks the second year the sport has returned to the island. While there will be lots of places to see the match for free, there will also be VIP ticketed areas with proceeds benefiting the American Friends of Sentebale, she said.

Nacho Figueras, the captain of Black Watch, is the only player thus far confirmed for the game.

The match will coincide with the official Opening Day of the season for Governors Island, territory that was long off-limits to the public while it was used for military purposes. Open to the public for free, this year it will get a new picnic area facing the Statue of Liberty as well as a public promenade encircling the entire island.

So far, Governors Islands events for this summer include:

May 30 - Opening Day Family Festival
June 6 and 7 - Free Dorothy Parker Society’s 11th annual Parkerfest and Roaring Twenties Jazz Age Lawn Party
June 12 to 14 - FIGMENT Festival
June 20 - Army Heritage Day
June 21 - Punks on the Island
July 4 weekend - Water Taxi Beach opens on Governors Island
July 18 - City of Water Day
Aug. 8 and 9 - Civil War Weekend
Oct. 11 - Last day of the Governors Island season in 2009.

The National Park Service will again offer free guided tours on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There will also be special Friday morning programming for kids.
