More summer concerts scheduled for Governors Island

thebeachatgovisland.jpgHere’s a new venue with an enticing name: The Beach at Governors Island.

The Highline Ballroom on July 11 will produce a show there featuring Grateful Dead tribute band Dark Star Orchestra with Keller Williams, Pete Francis (of Dispatch) and Barefoot Truth.

Tickets are $40 and includes the free ferry ride from Manhattan.

Also in July, Judy Collins will play Governors Island at Colonel’s Row for the Folks on the Island festival. The free concert will begin at 2 p.m. on July 26.

Update: It looks like Sunday, June 21 Make Music New York will present Punk Island, a “one-day experiment that transforms the stately island into a punk rockers’ paradise” with Reagan Youth, Blanks 77, and dozens more.

May 30 is Opening Day for Governors Island this season. July 4 weekend is the targeted opening date for its new Water Taxi Beach. Other Governors Island concerts and events announced earlier include the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic, FIGMENT Festival and the Dorothy Parker Society’s 11th annual Parkerfest.
