Furloughs, buyouts, cancelation at Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum — which raised its suggested admission fee to $10 from $8 less than a month ago — said Friday it will also cut salaries, furlough all staff for one-week this summer, and offer “voluntary separation packages” to its employees.

In addition, the planned fall exhibition of “Joint Venture: Donald Saff and the Art of Collaboration” has been canceled and the fourth-floor Morris A. and Meyer Schapiro Wing will go dark indefinitely, the New York Times reported.

“As with most other cultural organizations throughout the country, the economic downturn has created funding issues that have forced extremely difficult choices,” Museum Director Arnold L. Lehman said in a statement announcing the cuts.

The Brooklyn Museum’s endowment has dropped to $65 million from $93.1 a year ago, museum officials said. The current annual operating budget of $29 million, with a reduction of at least $2.31 million for the next fiscal year. The Brooklyn Museum, one of the oldest and largest art museums in the country, currently has a staff of 281 full-time and approximately 40 part-time employees.
