Empire State Building to go dark at 9 p.m. for Earth Day

The lights on the Empire State Building will “power down” and go dark tonight at 9 p.m. for one minute as part of an Earth Day promotion sponsored by Nickelodeon.
The one-minute of lights-out will take place at the same time the cable network pre-empts its programming and asks children to turn off their lights at home as a symbolic gesturing signaling their commitment to go green.
The Empire State Building itself is in the midst of a $20 million green makeover that will reduce the building’s carbon footprint and energy consumption, according to building officials.
For the remainder of the evening, the tower’s three tiers will be lit up green for Earth Day.
The colors will remain green Thursday as well, but for a different green occasion: the 25th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Elsewhere today for Earth Day, the Museum of the City of New York has free admission all day, coinciding with the final day of its exhibition “Growing and Greening New York.”
