Ringling Bros. circus confirmed for summer in Coney

Attempting to fill the void after Astroland’s closure, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus will open at Coney Island this summer, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced today.

The circus opens June 18 and will run through Sept. 7, according to the Ringling Bros. website for the Brooklyn circus, called “The Coney Island Boom-A-Ring.”

Performers will include Vincenta Pages and her seven white Bengal tigers; the Urias family, known as The First Family of the Motorcycle Globe; The Negrey Troupe, a world-renowned retinue of Russian acrobats; “Eccentric Personality Extraordinaire” Justin Case; and a trio of Asian elephants.

Tickets, priced from $10 to $65, will go on sale at noon on April 30.

The circus tent will be located on Surf Ave and West 21st Street on property owned by Taconic Investment Partners. The city, which wants to redevelop much of the area along Coney’s boardwalk, remains at odds with Joe Sitt and his Thor Equities’ plan to build amusements, hotels and retail on the portion of the property he owns. While Astroland is closed, the Cyclone rollercoaster, Deno’s Wonder Wheel and other elements remain. Friday fireworks resume June 19.
