NY Philharmonic cancels a free summer park concert

Update: Philharmonic sets six free summer concerts for July ‘09

The New York Philharmonic, which each summer plays huge free concerts in Central Park and other locations in and around New York City, has canceled its July date for Heckscher State Park in Long Island, where it’s played for free annually since 1977, Newsday reports.

“We have been seriously affected by the financial realities of the day,” NY Philharmonic president and executive director Zarin Mehta wrote in a Feb. 24 letter to the Islip Arts Council, adding the orchestra “hopes to return as soon as it is fiscally possible.”

The Philharmonic has not yet made any announcement about its other summer concerts.

New York’s free summer concerts last year included Central Park Summerstage, Broadway Under the Stars, the River to River festival, the Seaside Summer Concert Series and the Met Opera Summer Concert. Most are presented with the support of corporate or private sponsorships.
