Corned-beef champ eats 16-3/4 sandwiches in Midtown

Patrick “Deep Dish” Bertoletti today retained the corned-beef sandwich eating record, taking the first-ever Major League Eating Stroehmann Sandwich Slamm title by consuming 16-3/4 corned-beef sandwiches in 10 minutes.
That’s almost 17 eight-ounce sandwiches — 6 ounces of meat, two 1-ounce slices of rye bread — and no dunking.
Bertoletti (pictured at right) walked away with the $5,000 purse and beat his own previous record set three years ago: just 11 sandwiches in 10 minutes. (He’s upped his intake by almost three pounds of beef since then.)
Expected favorite Joey Chestnut, the reigning Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, came in second with 15 1/2 sandwiches, and won $2,500.
Humble Bob Shoudt came in 3rd with 13 and Tim “Eater X” Janus took 4th with 12-1/2.

Also competing were such notables as Pat “Pat From Moonachie” Philbin, Juliet “The Lovely” Lee and “Crazy Legs” Conti.
Eric “Badlands” Booker — by day a conductor on the 7 train — served as a judge, and also warmed the crowd up by performing competive-eating-themed hip-hop.
