Water Taxi completes purchase of Circle Line Downtown

New York Water Taxi said today it finalized its acquisition of Circle Line Harbor Cruises and announced plans to “to open one or two additional shore side destinations, similar Water Taxi Beach, in New York City this spring and summer.”
The New York Water Taxi, Circle Line Downtown and Water Taxi Beach will retain their names but will be operated under the new entity known as Harbor Experience Companies (whose website is still under construction.)
Through the purchase, the Water Tax gains the 600-passenger Zephyr, 149-passenger speed boat Shark and the lease rights at South Street Seaport’s Pier 16 plus Pier C in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
(Circle Line Harbor Cruises, also known as Circle Line Downtown is entirely separate from, though often confused with Circle Line Sightseeing, which is located near the Intrepid on the Hudson River.)
“This acquisition allows us to create a Harbor Pass that gives our customers a chance to experience the wonders of the Harbor on a sightseeing, tour or charter trips; eco, history or sunset music cruises; sailboat and speedboat rides or at several Water Taxi Beaches on the waters edge,” Tom Fox, the president and CEO of Harbor Experience Companies said in a statement announcing the completion of the deal.
In November, the Water Taxi announced plans to acquire Circle Line Downtown, which had exclusively operated the ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island until it lost the contract to Statue Cruises as of January 1, 2008. Terms of the sale were not disclosed, as both companies are privately held.
