Sports hits: Citi Field, free hockey, stadium webcams
Although the new Citi Field sign’s already in place atop the virgin ballfield, troubled Citigroup Inc. is finally having second thoughts about its 20-year sponsorship with the Mets, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing “people familiar with the matter.”
Back in November, NYC council members were already calling for Shea’s replacement to be renamed Citi/Taxpayer Field.
Visiting Laker Kobe Bryant last night set an all-time single-player point record for the current location of Madison Square Garden, sinking 61 points in a game that had even Knicks fan cheering M.V.P. for him by the end of the game. “The building is special, because it’s the last one left,” Bryant told the New York Times. “This is the last one that holds all the memories.”
Tonight at the Garden, the Rangers will retire Adam Graves’ No. 9 sweater.
Brooklyn’s Eastern Professional Hockey League team, the Aces, on February 8 will offer free admission to all kids under 12 when accompanied with a paying adult. They play the Danbury Mad Hatters at Aviator Arena at Floyd Bennett Field at 2 p.m.
This time last year, the New York Giants were gearing up for their own ticker-tape parade. This year, the club’s big calendar event is only the wrap-up breakfast on April 5 at the Sheraton Meadowlands Breakfast. Tickets are priced from $150.
