'Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark' confirmed for Broadway
“Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” is a go.
The new musical will begin previews at the Hilton Theatre on Jan. 16, 2010, Playbill reports.
Bono and The Edge of U2 are creating new music and lyrics while Tony Award-winner Julie Taymor (of Broadway’s “The Lion King,”) will direct.
“Spider-Man’s battles will hurtle the audience through an origin story both recognizable and unexpected—yielding new characters as well as familiar faces—until a final surprising confrontation casts a startling new light on this hero’s journey,” according to the group sales listing for the show at Broadway.com.
Casting has not been announced, but actress Evan Rachel Wood on Sunday at the Oscars told TV Guide Network she was “definitely going to do” Spider-Man on Broadway, the New York Times reported. Jim Sturgess has been discussed to play Peter Parker, Variety reports.
Regular tickets will go on sale in June, according to the official website for the show. But advance group sales for 12 or more tickets are now being accepted.
Update: A new New York Times story reports that “the subtitle of the musical, ‘Turn Off the Dark,’ is the title of one of the songs” and that “the title character will indeed be flying around the Hilton.”
