Amtrak exploring wi-fi options for train travel

amtrakcivilization.jpgUpdate: Amtrak plans to offer free wi-fi on Acela trains by 2010.

Although Amtrak makes wi-fi available at Penn Station, the Internet access disappears by the time you board the train.

But someday, eventually, that could change.

“Amtrak continues to explore options which will ultimately allow us to offer Wi-Fi service to our passengers,” Amtrak spokesperson Cliff Cole told NewYorkology in an e-mail today.

Amtrak currently uses T-Mobile HotSpot wireless Internet at five stations in the Northeast: Washington Union Station, Baltimore Penn Station, Wilmington Station, Philadelphia 30th Street Station and New York Penn Station.
