NY's average hotel rate falls to $192; deals from $49
A year ago, if you booked a $99 room at the dirtiest hotel in America, you were just cheap. But as hotel prices have come crashing down, you’re just lazy if you’re looking no farther than the Carter Hotel.
Room occupancy rates in New York City were down 24.6 percent to a mere 55.8 percent for the week ending January 24, as compared with the same period a year ago, according to Smith Travel Research.
The average daily room rate fell 18.1 percent but remains $191.81, according to Smith.
Here’s a quick gander at some of New York City’s hotel deals:
The Tablet boutique booking engine offers:
The Alex - $49
Hotel Gansevoort - $60
Royalton - $80
Hudson Hotel - $95
6 Columbus - $99
Gild Hall - $99
Sofitel - $189
SoHo House - $255
Rooms at The Jane have been lowered to a shockingly low $75 through March 15, when they’re scheduled to climb back to $99. Overlooking the Hudson River, the hotel’s drawback is that the small rooms feature shared-bathrooms down the hall.
The Pod Hotel is offering a winter special of $79. Though again here, not all rooms have a private shower.
Hilton’s New York on Sale
Hilton New York from $159
Millenium Hilton from $159
Waldorf=Astoria from $175.
The Hilton Garden Inn New York/Tribeca, which opened last month with rooms from $199, next week offers rooms from $149.
Deals from Hotels.com:
Ameritania Hotel - $107
Radisson Lexington - $109
Radisson Martinique - $109
Paramount - $119
Empire - $179
(Though be warned that Hotels.com continues to list WooGoo properties, which have come under much criticism.)
At Quikbook:
Affinia 50 - $144
Shoreham - $157
New York magazine points out that The Standard is so new, that even if you book the $195 still-in-construction rate,
you may wind up with a stellar Hudson Suite that would normally set you back $395.
A USAToday story about the filthy Carter Hotel notes that the Grand Hyatt could be had for $105 plus tax and fees.
In March, even more rooms add to the glut as the Portland-hip Ace Hotel plans to open with an introductory rate of $99 a night.
