Coney Island 'Phantom of the Opera' sequel due in '09
Just as old Coney Island fades to black, word comes from the Times of London that Andrew Lloyd Webber has set the sequel to “Phantom of the Opera” in old old Coney Island.
From The Times:The sequel will be set a decade or so after the first installment, during which time the Phantom has relocated from the Paris Opéra of Gaston Leroux’s original novel to Coney Island in Brooklyn, then still a hugely popular beach-side amusement resort for New Yorkers. “It was the place,” said Lloyd Webber. “Even Freud went because it was so extraordinary … people who were freaks and oddities were drawn towards it because it was a place where they could be themselves.”
If all goes as planned, “Phantom: Love Never Dies,” will premiere at the end of 2009 simultaneously in London, on Broadway and possibly in Shanghai.
In July, the Post reported the Phantom will be running a Coney freak show in 1906.
“Phantom of the Opera,” the longest-running musical in Broadway history, is still going strong at the Majestic Theatre, where last week it filled 96 percent of its seats with and average ticket price of $91.75, according to data provided by The Broadway League.
