LuPone's 'Gypsy' to close on Broadway on March 1
When Patti Lupone’s Tony-winning turn as Rose in Gypsy comes to an end on March 1, so does the show.
“Legendary director Arthur Laurents assembled a superb company lead by the incomparable Patti LuPone. And, while we wish Gypsy could entertain us all much longer, it has become clear to us that there is no way to replace the irreplaceable” lead producer Roger Berlind said in a statement.
“Gypsy” also stars Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti, who won 2008 Tonys in the Best Featured Actor and Best Featured Actress categories. The show was also nominated for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Costume Design of a Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical.
The 1959 show, based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, is directed by Arthur Laurents, who is the original author of the musical. The music is by Jule Styne with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Laurents is also working on directing a revival of his “West Side Story,” which will begin previews February 23.
When “Gypsy” closes, it will have played 388 regular performances and 27 previews. Tickets are priced from $32 to $117, with aisle seats for $135 and premium seats for $252. Student rush and standing room tickets are $27. It plays the St. James Theatre, located at 246 W. 44th St., map.
