Growler submarine to cruise East, Hudson rivers today

In another sign the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is almost ready to reopen this weekend, it’s Cold War-era submarine will make its return today via the East and Hudson rivers.

The Growler, which has been in dry dock at the Brooklyn Navy Yard for exterior repairs during the past few weeks, will depart the GMD shipyard between 10 and 10:30 a.m. this morning.

Towed by tug, it will make its way south down the East River, and pass under the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges sometime between 11 a.m. and noon.

The submarine should make the loop around the Battery and Lower Manhattan between noon and 1 p.m., with an expected arrival at Pier 86 sometime after 1 p.m.

The SSG 577 Growler was built in 1958 and was armed with the 56-foot-long Regulus cruise missile. As a part of the Intrepid’s military collection since 1989, the Growler’s interiors represent Cold War 1950s and 1960s.

intrepidbannernov8.jpgAlthough the Growler today will return to its same old Pier 86 position before the museum and pier was closed for renovations, the sub will not reopen for tours until spring, Susan Marenoff, the museum’s executive director told NewYorkology. It still needs interior upgrades, which will be done while it’s docked at Pier 86, she said.

The Intrepid Museum will reopen to the public on Saturday.
