Free Atlantic Basin party for Mary Whalen on Dec. 6
PortSide NY the non-profit that’s been doing the grunt work to turn an old oil tanker into a floating maritime cultural institution, has secured permission for a one-day free open house in Red Hook’s Atlantic Basin that will feature not just free cake but visits by the 1907 tugbot Pegasus and other crowd-pleasers from the New York harbor’s fleet.
The open house, December 6 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., will also serve as the 70th Birthday Party for Portside’s tanker, the Mary Whalen.
The party also serves as a great excuse to check out the Atlantic Basin, located next to the Brooklyn Cruise Ship Terminal, which has been in the spotlight lately as the city is considering what to do with this waterside location on the Buttermilk Channel. Possibilities could include a ferry to Governors Island, cultural offerings, or a ship-to-truck beer distributorship.
Public access to the Atlantic Basin is available via the gate at Pioneer and Conover streets, map.
Online rsvps for the open house are encouraged (so they know how much birthday cake to buy,) but not required.
If you’re looking for a more hands-on experience, Portside is looking for volunteers to help get the ship ready for the party.
