This past Saturday, NewYorkology was on the back of a bouncy, swift-moving golf cart touring the normally off-limits south side of Governors Island. It was the first tour of the former military installation as part of Open House New York.
The biggest surprise of the tour was how many of the buildings are already being torn down. There was lots of rubble amid the other remaining buildings that frankly, aren’t nearly as interesting as the (untouched ones) on the public side of the island in the historic district.
More buildings are coming down today and the public is invited to watch, the New York Times reports.
The best part of the south side of the island is its location. From the island’s southern tip, you get a full-frontal of the Statue of Liberty as she looks out toward the harbor’s entrance.
NewYorkology has a few videos and pictures taken during the Saturday tour, (although the guide only let us off the cart once for stable pictures.)
See the south side of Governors Island, with glimpses of the Queen Mary 2 docked at the Brooklyn Cruise Ship terminal:

In addition to the south-side island tours for OHNY, Governors Island opened up three normally-locked buildings in the historic district; the wedding chapel, the cinema and the big gym.
This weekend marks the final opening days of the season for Governors Island.
More pictures of the South Side of Governors Island after the jump.
