OHNY: Floyd Bennett Field's Hangar B dance charrette

NewYorkology contributor Vidiot commits journalism by night, edits Cocktailians and explores NYC by day. He’s especially interested in the infrastructure, transit, architectural wonders, drinking establishments, and hidden corners of the greatest city in the world. This weekend, he’s covering OpenHouse New York.

As part of the Open House NY festivities this weekend, Dancing in the Streets and choreographer Joanna Haigood are presenting “Breaking Ground: A Dance Charrette.” (A charrette is an intense process in which participants come up with answers to design problems in a short period of time; these dances were conceived of and choreographed in just five days — neither the choreographers nor the public knew the location for the performance until the first day of rehearsals.)

With logistical help from the National Park Service and the Historic Aircraft Restoration Project, five choreographers produced five short modern dances at Floyd Bennett Field’s historic Hangar B.

The dances, which are free and don’t require reservations, will be performed again for the second day of OHNY at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Floyd Bennett Field, which is also taking part in OpenHouse NY, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For the performance, the audience is split into five color-coded groups, each of whom follows a “flight attendant” to the location of each dance in turn. The historic military aircraft in the hangar variously serve as backdrops, props, and focal points of the musicless dances, whose tones vary from whimsical to disturbing. HARP docents are available after the performance to answer questions and tell stories about the aircraft.

This weekend, shuttle buses run from both the Ryan Visitors Center at Floyd Bennett and from the Flatbush Ave stop on the 2 train, the end of the 2 line. (And despite what the program insert says, the bus to the subway doesn’t always stop at the visitors center.)
