Tugs to tow USS Intrepid to Manhattan on Thursday

intrepidstucknov2006.JPG

After $120 million in repairs, the USS Intrepid is on schedule to return to Manhattan on Thursday morning, officials of the air, sea and space museum said today.

The itinerary:

11 a.m. Intrepid departs Homeport Pier, Staten Island
12:15 p.m. Intrepid passes Statue of Liberty
1 p.m. Intrepid passes Ground Zero with special tribute including former crew members unfurling an American flag
2 p.m. Intrepid arrives at Pier 86, Manhattan

The public will be able to watch the voyage from Battery Park, along the West Side waterfront and Pier 84. For its 2006 departure, NewYorkology also had great views from onboard the Staten Island Ferry, though on the return trip, the ferry diverted through the Buttermilk Channel.

The USS Intrepid is scheduled to reopen to the public as a museum on November 8. You can buy tickets in advance online to skip the lines there. Tickets are $19.50 for adults; $15.50 for veterans, seniors and college students $14.50 for 6 to 17-year-olds; and $7.50 for children 2 to 5 years old.
