Italian American Museum opens in Little Italy remnants
In celebration of the immigrants who helped define New York City, the Italian American Museum will open Tuesday at the site of the former Italian bank Banca Stabile, the New York Times reports today.
It will open at 155 Mulberry St. at Grand, map.
The Times note there’s not much remaining of Little Italy, possibly fewer than 1,000 Italian-Americans in the neighborhood, which has given way to encroaching Chinatown. The paper quotes Maria T. Fosco, a museum board member who has been researching Little Italy’s history:“Most people who lived on Mulberry Street were from Naples,” she explained. “Those who lived on Elizabeth Street were from Sicily, those from Mott Street were from Calabria, and anyone north of Broome Street was from Bari.” Earlier: Little Italy shrinks, making way for tourist version
