USS Intrepid prepares for Oct. 2 return to Manhattan

One week from today, the USS Intrepid is scheduled to make her return to Manhattan in preparation to reopen November 8 as a floating sea, air and space museum.
Hopefully it will make fewer headlines than her departure, which almost didn’t happen as the aircraft carrier was stuck in the Hudson River mud.
The first attempt was made November 6, 2006 (and people in the crowd really did say, “we’re gonna need a bigger boat” when the tugs failed.)
But after some serious dredging, success was scored December 5, 2006. (And the senior tug operator said he was that close to giving up.)
The Intrepid was towed to a dry dock in Bayonne, New Jersey for repairs, and then in April 2007 was towed to Staten Island for more work. You can still see her docked to the east of the Staten Island Ferry terminal.

The Intrepid has two great webcams: one points at Pier 86 and the other is on the ship herself, pointed onto her deck.

And while crews are still busy preparing the renovated Pier 86 for her return, it looks like one of her adjacent exhibits — the USS Growler — has been out for a cruise.
Apparently the submarine, which has been docked in Red Hook near the Brooklyn cruise ship terminal (pictured, below), is on the move in the East River today.

Meanwhile, the Intrepid’s Concorde is still out at Aviator Sports in Brooklyn, but tours are not offered there. It too, will return to Pier 86 in Manhattan.
