Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex to open in Soho in Nov.

rockannex.jpgCleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November will open a 25,000-square-foot annex in SoHo, including a permanent “New York Rocks” exhibition with items such as Bruce Springsteen’s 1957 Chevy, John Lennon’s Record Plant Piano, David Byrne’s “Big Suit” from his Talking Heads days, Billy Joel’s notebook with the original lyrics for “The Stranger” album, CBGB’s front awning and cash register, as swell as a map to “highlight key locations around Manhattan that have musical significance, including Studio 54 and The Chelsea Hotel.”

The announcement was made today by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Billy Joel, Clive Davis, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum CEO Terry Stewart and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation CEO Joel Peresman.

cbgbcashregisterinsitu.JPG“It’s only fitting that the role New York City has played in launching the careers of so many of the world’s most talented artists - like Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Paul Simon, Blondie and the Velvet Underground - on the world’s greatest stages - like the Fillmore East, the Apollo Theater, and Madison Square Garden - be recognized and honored with the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex,” Bloomberg said.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame annex will be located at 76 Mercer St., map.

Tickets to the Annex will go on sale in October at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex website.

In addition to the NY Rocks exhibit, the annex will house a Hall of Fame area, paying tribute to each artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as an immersive theater chronicling key moments in music history form artist such as Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Who and Patti Smith.
