Broadway pedestrian/bike zone prepping for opening

pedzone.jpg

The Broadway Boulevard is taking shape between Times Square and Herald Square, with two lanes already blocked off to cars, making way for bikes and pedestrians.

pedzonebikesignal.jpgA green bike lane is already marked the length of the route, which this week was being used by pedestrians, delivery guys pushing large carts as well as cyclists travelling both north and south (although the route is marked for south-bound traffic only.)

The plan is to fill in the other lane with benches, tables and chairs by the time the stretch of Broadway officially opens. City officials are aiming for a “mid-August” opening.

Here’s a video of how it looked this week from the starting point of 42nd and Broadway:

The new zone starts at the southern end of Times Square, at 42nd Street, map.

It stretches down Broadway to 35th, which is the top of Herald Square, map.
