Weekend on tap: hot air balloon rides, City of Water Day
It’s still a bit of a game of catch-up here at NewYorkology as it’s the first weekend back after vacation. There’s a number of cool things going on this weekend in NYC, including the new hot air balloon rides in Central Park (which you should reserve now.)

Friday
AeroBalloon begins hot air balloon rides over Central Park at Cherry Hill near 72nd Street, west of Bethesda Fountain (daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. weather permitting through Aug. 22)
Free JFK Airtrain rides to mark the airport’s 60th year in operation
Philip Glass Ensemble plays the “Powaqqatsi” score with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and Marta Topferova in a free show at the Prospect Park Bandshell for Celebrate Brooklyn
Gate|Beckett “Eh Joe” with Liam Neeson at the Lincoln Center Festivalat 7:30 p.m.

Museums open to 9 p.m.: the Met; Whitney, (which is pay-what-you-wish from 6 to 9 p.m. and sometimes hosts Whitney Live dance parties;) Cooper-Hewitt; the Morgan, (with free admission from 7 p.m.;) Neue Galerie.
Closing at 10 p.m.: Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art, (with free admission from 7 p.m. to close.)
