Too big for Bklyn, Murakami's 'Oval Buddha' in Midtown

When the Brooklyn Museum was preparing to bring the "© MURAKAMI" exhibition from Los Angeles, word leaked that one of the stars of the show was too big to take part.
Literally too big. At 6,613-pounds and more than 18 1/2 feet tall, Takashi Murakami's "Oval Buddha" couldn't fit into the Brooklyn Museum.
Instead, it's found a home in the indoor public sculpture garden at 590 Madison Ave. facing 56th Street, map.
The quirky steel and aluminum sculpture is covered with platinum leaf and "reflects the artist's evolving body, mind, and spirit and his continuing exploration of his cultural, national, religious, and artistic reality," according to the hand-out at 590 Mad.

The sculpture plaza is free and open to the public, and has plenty of tables for a brown-bag lunch. That's cheaper than the $10 (higher-than-normal) admission price in Brooklyn for the full show.
"Oval Buddha" will remain in Midtown until September 7. The Brooklyn exhibition will close July 13. On June 1, Louis Vuitton will launch Murakami's new Monogramouflage line at the museum.
Update: Midtown Lunch has created a list of places to buy lunch nearby that you can bring to the tables at 590 Madison Ave.
